Product Description
The story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father from three possible candidates told using songs by the popular 70s group abba. Based on the hit broadway musical. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 12/16/2008 Starring: Meryl Streep Colin Firth Run time: 109 minutes Rating: Pg13

The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show Cybill, and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone, Mamma Mia! deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:
Mama Mia
I enjoyed the movie and am glad to have the dvd to watch whenever I want to. I also purchased the cd and play it in my car all the time!

Fun movie
This is a really fun movie and I knew all the lyrics! Why doesn't Hollywood make movies like this more?

Love ABBA, hate the movie
I grew up with ABBA through high school and they have always been a guilty pleasure so I was really looking forward to this movie. (I haven't had a chance to see the play.) What a disappointment. The singing was terrible (with the exception of the daughter) and the acting just as bad. I haven't seen a musical this embarrassing since "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (which at least had decent singing but was still so bad it managed to effectively kill the careers of both the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton).

MAMA MIA - the movie
I have always DISLIKED ABBA - however, against my better judgement, I saw the stageshow in London soon after it was presented and liked it very much (all except the mob dance at the end). I have been looking forward to seeing the film, especially with Meryl Streep on board. The cast is great BUT what a miserable disaster this movie is. The mistake is that the director has filmed a STAGESHOW. The movie is exhausting! Everyone RUNS and no one seems to walk. The production numbers blend into one. The facial expressions are all overdone. In other words, a stageshow has been filmed. A total disappointment. I was also NOT IMPRESSED with the actors - Julie Walters looked terrible, the men were hopeless and had no singing voices and even Meryl Streep was not at her best. The three women were also disappointing. A total flop for me .......... but I am sure that I am in the minority here just as I was when ABBA first burst on the scene back in the 70's. Makes you remember just how good the Beatles really were!

Take a Chance On
While my two-year old great nephew was derailing a runaway Lionel train around the Christmas tree and had totally wrecked a ranch-style plastic home, my other great nephews and great niece were exhorting me to open the presents they brought me. Knowing I had seen the play on Broadway three times and once in Toronto, it was no surprise that "Momma Mia," the DVD was behind the decorative Christmas paper. "Oh, can we watch it, Uncle Ed?" (If ever a gift could keep on giving right back to the givers)!

Even though Meryl Streep is old enough to be a grandmother (and probably is), the camera never gets too close to her face, as she plays a barely middle-aged mother of a love-struck daughter on the verge of marriage. The daughter discovers that Mom was a bit wilder in her youth having made love to three men at approximately the same time. The plot unfolds when she decides to invite her "fathers" to the wedding without her mother's knowledge. MOMMA MIA!

This is loosely based on a late 60's movie titled "Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell," where the twist is that Gina Lollabrigitta tells three American World War II veterans that they are the father of her son. Their guilt and money provide for the same. Only here, the setting is an unnamed Greek isle instead of Italy, and mom is barely scraping by running what can be charitably called an inn.

An unabashed ABBA fan, I enjoy each hit over and over again, and could play them all day. I play them when I am in a good mood, and when I need to get in a good mood. The music from this can be found on the CD for the movie (d'uh), or ABBA Gold, which has everyone but, "I do."

So, love me or leave me, but please don't deceive me, because I won't deceive you. Meryl Streep reveals her absolute depth in her performance. Her ending with her co-stars is a triumph of harmony on stage or at Waterloo where Napoleon did surrender. Pierce Brosnan's bellowing efforts might make you want to suck on a lemon while someone is running steel fingernails across a blackboard, but the movie is fun even in a rich man's world, or for a super trouper. The supporting cast was superb. I was particularly impressed with Julie Walters who played one of Meryl Streep's adult sidekicks. Christine Baranski was predictably good. I never imagined that Stellan Skaarsgard could kick up a storm the way he did.

My gift included a trailer that allowed the viewer to see the making of the movie, and the songs being replayed in the movie with the words appearing, but without the bouncing ball. It helped me learn a lot of the correct words that men seem to have a harder time identifying them than women do when it comes to song. (Up to age 50, I thought Popeye was strong to the "pinach" cuz I eats me spinach).

Do I recommend this DVD? I ask you in all honesty, without a song or dance what are we? So I say thank you for the music, (and the DVD,) for giving it to me. Just remember there is no comparison between this and what you would see on Broadway or in Toronto. The movie could only leave you disappointed. It is entertaining especially if you are forgiving of Streep and Brosnan not bering singers.

Thank you, Christian, Gabriella, Samuel Adam, and Emmanuel.

Uncle Ed
