The new Switch mode enables you to tailor your SR notebook to the way you use your computer. A set of buttons above the keyboard lets you set three distinct usage personalities, or modes. You can base your modes on the scenarios in which you use your PC--such as home, work and entertainment. For instance, you can get your favorite websites and personal email at home; business productivity applications when your at work; and multimedia programs when you're ready to play. Each mode is customized with its own unique wallpaper and set of 5 shortcuts to your preferred programs.
Security Enhancements
Sony's VAIO SR notebooks take security seriously, employing a biometric fingerprint sensor and proprietary hard disk drive protection software to ensure your data is protected from unauthorized use as well as accidental damage. It also stores passwords to secure web sites you visit, so authentication and access are quick and easy--you only need your fingerprint. It also includes an integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM) TCG Ver.1.2 compliant chip that enhances security by allowing you to control access on a specific client/user basis.
The Basics
- Processor: Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 45nm Montevina series Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor, which has a 2.26 GHz processor speed, super-sized 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a extra-large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. And you'll be able to encode video on-the-go and watch HD movies with Intel HD Boost.
The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:
- Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
- Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.

- Hard Drive: The extra-large 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
The G-Sensor Shock Protection feature makes your data even less vulnerable to loss or damage. When the built-in 3D acceleration sensor detects a risky movement like being dropped, the HDD-head will lock up to secure its position and protect the disc from scratching. An intelligent algorithm, unique to VAIO PCs, judges whether or not a movement is risky, activating disk drive protection only when your hardware is at risk.
- Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC2-6400, 1 x 2 GB, 2 x 1 GB) helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card. It also offers a top-of-class 800 MHz speed. This notebook has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 5100AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. Died almost immediately, BUT......
I was very enthusiastic when this machine showed up at home. Very light and very brilliant picture. The next day, while kicking back feeling pretty content and surfing for accessories, it died. Hmmm.....
I called up SONY and after jumping through all the normal hoops of button pressing and holding sessions I was connected with an operator who talked me through the troubleshooting process. I was not able to complete the troubleshooting that time but when I called back to continue, expecting the same hoop-la, I was amazed to find myself fast-tracked to an actual operator. The system recognized my phone number and that I had called recently. As I had suspected I was not able to recover the machine and my contact information was taken for referral to a local representative.
To my surprise, within 2 business days I had a call from the local person and the next day he made the repairs at my office. I was extremely impressed with this process and even though the machine died the day after I got it I was so impressed with the process I would buy another if the need were present.
Buy this machine, it's great and the support couldn't be better.
Sony vgn-sr140 E/B 
Pretty Good deal from AMAZON.com warehouse. Just a slight problem with the screen. I think sony needs to do something regarding the monitor frame, and screen of this model. Frames is too thin so it doesn't really support the screen.
Consider a Configure-to-Order
I don't have this computer yet -- I just ordered it today, from Sony's website -- but I am just coming to warn folks to consider buying it from Sony's website. Not for any loyalty reasons (I'm actually more loyal to Amazon.com than Sony!) but because of the cost. This is a nicely configured computer, but at Sony's website you can configure this with a 2.4 GHz P series processor, 320 GB of HDD space at 7200 rpm, 4 GB of RAM, and ATI Radeon HD graphics with a HDMI output -- for $1329. If you want the pink version, add $50. You can get the total package, tax and shipping included, for less than Amazon charges you for this before that. (Probably not their fault.)
And if you are a college student, join Sony Style Campus and get an extra discount. Actually, you might get the discount regardless of whether you are, as long as you register an account with them and log in when you buy it. I got a further discount, which means that I got the above-mentioned configuration for $1238 before tax ($1398 + tax, and shipping is free if you opt for the 5-day).

I love the fashion looking of the vaio and especially the key board. the audio is not very good but I can accept that.

This laptop is great! I bought mine approximately two-three monhs ago and have not found one thing about it that I don't like. This is a great laptop at an affordable price!
