A Perry Como Christmas is the audio equivalent of a Norman Rockwell painting. Like Nat "King" Cole and Bing Crosby, whom Como fondly emulated, Como defined for many Americans what the holidays sounded like through the '50s and '60s. With the advent of widespread television, Como practically became the man for wholesome holiday pleasure and entertainment. Greatest Christmas Songs will reestablish that fact for many who've put on a Como record every season. This collection brings together many of his classic seasonal recordings and some tracks even collectors will be delighted to find, including "Some Children See Him," recorded in 1954 but left off The Perry Como Christmas Album. At 21 cuts, complete with engaging liner notes, this is an essential collection of Como Christmas greats that the immortal baritone presents for the end of the century and the beginning of another. Call it a pop-cultural milestone that will never go out of style. --Martin Keller

Christmas Classics By The Best Christmas Singer! Christmas Nostalgia All The Way! ![]()
This compilation by the great PERRY COMO, my favorite singer/crooner of christmas music in the old 1940's, 1950's, 1960's easy-listening style, is perhaps flawless. And what makes this compilation such a treasure is that most/all songs aren't on other christmas cd's by PERRY as many are alternate versions of songs he recorded elsewhere. For example, THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE (HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS) is an earlier 1950's recording and not the same version as the one that's on his 1959 album, SEASON'S GREETINGS. Or you get rarities (singles?) by PERRY such as IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK ALOT LIke CHRISTMAS and I SAW MOMMY KISSING SANTA CLAUS. Both htese songs are amongst the best ever recorded, at least in my opinion, and IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK ALOT LIKE CHRISTMAS may even be my favorite version of the song.
There is a backing orchestra and chorus throughout the cd and it is 100% recommended. I really don't recommend christmas music more than PERRY COMO'S christmas music and this is no exception. This is a wonderful compliment to PERRY COMO'S - SEASONS GREETINGS album (cd) and PERRY COMO SINGS CHRISTMAS MUSIC album (cd). Try to get all three if you can. Also, this cd makes for a perfect christmas cd for background music during the christmas season when entertaining family and friends.![]()
The smooth sound of Perry Como and familiar Christmas songs just goes together and makes the season even more special![]()
Perry Como has topped my list of Christmas music for more than four decades. An extraordinarily gifted singer, his silky smoothness is almost unmatchable. This album contains my favorite versions (by Como or anyone else) of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "Silver Bells", "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas", "Home For The Holidays", and especially the included version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" with its magical intro. This CD is worth purchasing for these five songs alone, never mind almost two dozen. The very-talented Ray Charles Singers perfectly back up many of the songs. I look forward to listening to this CD over and over again every time the Christmas season approaches.![]()
This CD contains eight of the eleven songs from the 1968 recording sessions that so long ago adorned our phonographs and hearts with Perry's warm traditional touch. I'm speaking of the LP with the photo of Perry Como's face surrounded by a wreath on the cover, currently unavailable on CD (as far as I know). The remaining three songs can be found on two other CD's currently available at Amazon; "A Perry Como Christmas" contains "Christmas Eve" and "Carol Medley" (both must-haves); And "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Forever", containing "Toyland". Not discounting the value of the other classic selections on these three CD's, all of the tracks on the '68 LP came from the same sessions, lending to its compilation a certain warmth of continuity that anthology oriented collections simply cannot convey. May I suggest recreating the '68 album as closely as possible by programming the songs in the order they originally appeared (with one addition): Side 1: Christmas Eve, Do You Hear What I Hear, Christ Is Born, The Little Drummer Boy, There Is No Christmas Like A Home Christmas, O Holy Night. Side 2: Carol Medley, Silver Bells, Some Children See Him (omitted from the original release), Toyland, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Ave Maria. Note: "The Little Drummer Boy" is a different mix, but I don't think you'll be disappointed, since Perry can be heard on one more verse! Merry Christmas!![]()
I never expected to be playing Christmas music in September, but when I received Perry Como's "Greatest Christmas Songs" CD I couldn't resist. It is packed with some of Perry's most beautiful Christmas songs and, surprisingly, there were a few I didn't know. This CD is highly recommended. I was almost in the mood to wrap presents and start decorating. But---no fear! I'll still be doing those kinds of things on December 24th, as my family well knows. This was the very first item I've ever purchased from Amazon.com and I must say that I was totally satisfied with the service.
